NSS(National Service Scheme)

Sri Parasakthi College for Women, Courtallam

              National Service Scheme was launched during the Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday Centenary year 1969.In our College NSS was started in 1971 with two units. At present there are 4 Units are functioningie Units No. 20,21,22 and 75.

NSS programme aims to inculcate the sense of social welfare in students and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone “who is needy” gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources.

Camps are held annually in a nearby rural village. Four units are functioning under this scheme in our college. Some of the highlighting features are:

  • Blood donation camps are conducted at regular intervals by the NSS units in the campus with the assistance of Government Medical College, Tirunelveli and Government Hospital, Tenkasi. Sizable number of students volunteered to donate their blood. The NSS unit has received an award from the District Collector, Tirunelveli for the maximum turnout in such camps.
  • Eye Donation awareness camps have been organised in the campus. Due to the initiative taken by the NSS volunteers, 18 volunteers gave their willingness to donate their eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli.
  • NSS volunteers participated in Rallies organised towards creating awareness about AIDS, TB, Road safety and avoiding plastics.
  • Observance of days of importance like NSS day, Blood donation day, Breast feeding day, Anti Atomic day, Anti Ragging day and Womens day are an important component of NSS activities.
  • 25 NSS volunteers are sent for Hundial counting at Thirukuttalanathar temple, Courtallam and KasiViswanathar temple, Tenkasi once in every three months. Besides this, cleaning the surrounding areas of the temple has also been carried out.

Training programmes are also organised by the NSS units. Till date, training camps with the following themes have been organized.

  • Road safety & Patrol
  • Personality Development
  • Motivation
  • Meditation and developing the memory power
  • First Aid
  • E-Governance have been organised.
  • Free Eye and Dental check-up have been organised with the assistance of Dr.Agarwal Eye hospital and Charlie Dental Trust for students and faculty.
  • 71 NSS students are issued with Pancard through the support extended by BWDA.
  • Initiatives have been taken by the NSS to promote the physical and mental well being of the students. Towards this end, smiling therapy and clap exercise have been taught.
  • 200 students participated in the residential camp conducted by Vivekananda Cultural Academy, Kanyakumari for spiritual and holistic development of youth.

Special camps organised by NSS

NSS is extending its services to the community by organising special camps in the nearby villages.

  • Special camp held at Ilanji during 2011 focussed upon awareness creation women’s health and hygiene, consumer rights, vermicomposting and environmental protection, child labour, AIDS, tobacco and alcoholism.
  • Another special camp was organised at Vedampudur. Activities were designed to create awareness about chronic ailments like cancer, AIDS &TB amongst the villagers. Tree plantation has been undertaken. Awareness about Consumer Rights, Government schemes, deaddiction, Hygiene and Sanitation have been carried out.

4 units are functioning under this scheme. Awareness camp, rally, observing marked days are the usual activities of NSS. Some of the highlighting activities are.

  • Eye Donation Awareness Camp was organized on 31.07.2012 in collaboration with the Lions Clubs, Sivakasi. With great pride it is recorded that 16 pairs of eyes are donated to Arvind Eye Hospital through NSS of our college.
  • Blood  Donation camps are organized specially when the government hospital, Tenkasi is in need of blood for ‘Blood Bank’.
  • Voluntary service has been rendered during Physically Challenged Day seminar at Courtallam and Srinivasa Thirukalyana Festival at Mounasamy Mutt, Courtallam. Community Linked activities are a regular feature of NSS Units of our college.
  • A state level seminar on ‘Personality development and Motivation’ was organized.
  • Special lectures were organized on Anti ragging Day and World Breast Feeding Day.
  • With the assistance of Charlie Dental Trust and Dr.Agarwal Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, dental & eye check up were conducted for students & faculty.
  • Student volunteers assist in Hundial counting at Thirukutralanathar Thirukoil, Courtallam anduzhavarapani at Kasiviswanathar Temple, Tenat Kasiviswanathar Temple, Tenkasi.

Each Unit has 100 students from different disciplines and totally 400 students are registered in this Scheme. 
The aim of National Service Scheme is “ Development of the personality of Students through Community Service”. The motto of the NSS is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. The symbol of the NSS is based on the “Rath Wheel of the Konark SUN Temple” situated in Orissa.

  • Dr. V. Sasikala M.A., M.Phil., ph.D., has received the best Programme Officer ( Former Principal of our College) University Award for the year 2005.

  • Dr. S. kanagammal M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., Programme Officer has received the best University Award for the year 2008.All the Programme Officers of NSS have received “Helen Keller Award” for the Organisation of Eye Donation Camp at Sri Parasakthi College, Courtallam.
